CBD and The Role it Plays in Helping with Pain Management

CBD has gained a lot of buzz over the past year and that’s primarily because of the role it plays when it comes to pain management and controlling seizures. Cannabidiol is among the most prevalent cannabinoids from medical marijuana but unlike its THC counterpart, cannabidiol is non-psychoactive. This means it doesn’t cause that “high” feeling in users. Studies continue to show that CBD can play a significant role in pain management though.

How CBD Works as a Pain Reliever

The ECS, otherwise known as the endocannabinoid system, is the massager system in the body. This system tends to regulate many functions and is important when it comes to homeostasis of pain. Within the system endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors are present in the pain circuits from the endings of the peripheral sensory nerve all the way to the brain. Typically, agonist cannabinoids bind to the receptors and eventually stimulate the secretion of neurotransmitters that send signals to the body, thereby causing “pain”. Antagonist cannabinoids like CBD don’t bind to these receptors and instead block the neurotransmitters’ release. CBD tends to inhibit pro-inflammatory molecules as well as modulate the nociceptive thresholds therefore having therapeutic properties against neuropathic and inflammatory pains.

CBD is often used as a therapeutic aid for chronic pain when other painkillers and sleep aids don’t provide good results. It’s often used for the following:

  • Chronic Inflammation – Chronic inflammation can lead to pain and cause damage to tissues. CBD works as an anti-inflammatory providing short-term pain relief and, in some cases, long-term solutions to the matter. More importantly it doesn’t affect the kidney, stomach and liver like alternatives.
  • Muscle Relaxation – Sometimes pain can be caused by stiffness to the muscles. CBD has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects that can improve muscle relaxation. More importantly, CBD doesn’t cause issues while exercising like other alternatives.
  • Sleep Disturbances – Pain tends to annoy the bodies nerves and this imbalanced pressure on the nerves can disturb sleep. If the body feels like its exposed to danger throughout he day and night this can cause additional health issues both physical and mental. CBD acts as a neuroprotective cannabinoid and enables the user to not only fall asleep quicker but also stay asleep longer for a more refreshing period of rest.
  • Depression – Chronic pain can often lead to depression. With CBD being used to relieve pain it helps improve symptoms and lower the likelihood of depression.
